Directory of Asperger/Autism Diagnosticians

Criteria for an Autism Spectrum diagnosis

This Directory includes professionals who conduct evaluations to determine whether or not a person meets the criteria for an Autism Spectrum diagnosis.  Professionals listed in this directory have not been vetted or endorsed by AANE. Some professionals have been recommended by members of our community. Other professionals are self-referrals. We strongly recommend you conduct your own due diligence when determining if any professional listed here is the right fit for your particular situation. Some providers accept insurance.   Please contact AANE with your questions or to learn about how we can help.

We are always looking for additional diagnosticians who understand Asperger’s and Autism, especially ones recommended by our community. Please complete this form if you would like to share a professional with the greater AANE community.

Angela M. Currie, Ph.D.

Dr. Currie prides herself on helping clients and parents feel comfortable within the testing environment. Be it through taking a calm and gentle approach or integrating humor, she works to establish trust and comfort for each family. She aims to create long term relationships with families and values the opportunity to help a client progress through various stages of development.

To her evaluations, Dr. Currie brings a wealth of experience in individual and group therapy, particularly for anxiety-based disorders, and she founded NESCA’s CBT services. This experience allows her to write more detailed and individualized therapeutic recommendations that take both the learning and emotional profiles into consideration. She also has extensive experience in parent and school consultation and training, and works to take a whole system into consideration when conceptualizing a child’s needs and writing recommendations. She frequently observes children at school and participates at IEP meetings.

I have been conducting evaluations with children, adolescents, and adults for 20 years. People are referred for testing by schools, physicians, therapists, or themselves. I work in collaboration with the client (or their family) in order to answer the question that brought you here, namely trying to understand and resolve the particular problem with which you are struggling. Together we will discuss different testing options and determine which type of evaluation (e.g., psychological, educational, neuropsychological) is going to best answer your question.

For people who suspect they have Asperger’s or ASD and want a professional evaluation, I provide a comprehensive assessment of these conditions. Based on questionnaire results, review of documentation and an interview process, I determine if an individual has Asperger’s or ASD, or whether there are other conditions that may play a role in the person’s overall functioning.

Kerry uses an eclectic approach to treatment but believes that any treatment involving young people should include the following:

  • Treatment should include the people who are important in the child's life, especially parents.
  • Treatment should be individualized to the child's age, developmental level, learning style, and family needs.
  • Treatment should focus on helping the child learn effective coping techniques to more positively face life challenges.

The goal of neuropsychological testing is to measure certain functions of the brain, and make sense of an individual's behavior, learning, cognitive processing, and perhaps even potential to achieve. There is not one single test, but a "battery" of different tests (individualized to the needs of the person at hand) that tap into different aspects of brain functioning. For instance, there are measures that tap into lanugage functioning, measures that assess non-verbal functioning (visual/spatial processing), measures that assess immediate memory, longer term memory, planning, organization, the ability to integrate parts into wholes, etc.
