Transition to Kindergarten for Children with Autism During Covid-19: A Two Phase Study

Research Study

I am currently recruiting caregivers of children with autism to provide their perspectives on their child's kindergarten experience for part of my dissertation study. The purpose of this research project is to examine the kindergarten transition experiences among culturally and linguistically caregivers of autistic children. Specifically, this study seeks to examine the kindergarten transition experiences of SCLD Spanish-speaking or English-speaking caregivers of autistic children whose child entered kindergarten in the past 5 years. This study will help inform how to best support systems collaboration between the home and school setting for children with autism spectrum disorder, in order to maximize outcomes for children with autism when they enter kindergarten and throughout schooling.

I am looking for caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder whose child attended kindergarten in the past 5 years (2016-2021) to fill out an online survey about their child's kindergarten experience. The survey will take around 15 minutes and caregivers will be entered into a raffle for one of 30, $20 Walmart Giftcards. Caregivers can be fluent in English or Spanish. At the end of the survey, there is also an opportunity to participate in a separate focus group, examining the experiences of Hispanic/Latinx caregivers whose child entered kindergarten at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic (Fall 2020-Fall 2021). Participants will each receive $50 for their participation.

This project has been approved by the University of Houston Institutional Review Board 713-743-9204. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at ejellinek@uh.edu
