Transcending the Transition Plan

Research Study

Hello! My name is Andrea Benatar. I am a rising junior at Carnegie Mellon University studying design, and I am currently conducting research on improving transition options and access to necessary resources for young adults with autism once aged out of high school. With so many students who have developmental disabilities placed on eternal waitlists for postsecondary programs and public waiver funding, I am interested in pinpointing and eventually designing accessible alternatives to ease the stress of this transition period for students and parents alike.

After a semester of research and preliminary interviews, I have developed a rough prototype of a service that could provide parents with a comprehensive, individualized list of resources in their area, and facilitate a remote day program and curriculum for students living at home after high school.

In order to continue expanding upon this research and potential intervention, I would love to connect with students on the spectrum (as well as parents and caretakers of students on the spectrum) currently going through the transition period out of high school to learn about any struggles, triumphs, questions or concerns that they may have experienced.
