Moving on from your Pediatrician: Things to Consider When Changing to an Adult Medical Provider
Part of becoming an adult means moving on from your pediatric medical care provider to a provider who cares for adults. Choosing a good match can be challenging for young adults on the spectrum and they may require support. When is the right time? Does the gender of the provider matter? What special issues does the new provider need to understand or have experience with?
This webinar will review common medical conditions in the autism population, good questions to ask a potential new provider, and considerations about privacy and consent to allow another adult to communicate about your care. In addition, practical topics like proximity to home, ability to coordinate with specialists, willingness to prescribe psychiatric meds if necessary, are all important considerations. Support from your pediatric team will be vital in making this a successful transition.
Moving on from your pediatrician: Eileen Costello, MD, is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine, currently serves as the Chief of Ambulatory Pediatrics at Boston Medical Center (BMC). Dr. Costello’s clinical interests include the care of children and adolescents with developmental disabilities, including autism, and children with mental health disorders. Also, an author, Costello’s well-known book, Quirky Kids: Understanding and Helping Your Child Who Doesn’t Fit In, highlights her creative and innovative approaches to both clinical care and specifically to children with neuro-developmental challenges.
