Community Supports for Effective Transition Planning: Launching Youth with AS/ASD from the Classroom to the Community
Transition is the complex process by which an adolescent or young adult masters the skills necessary to function independently in postsecondary life. Often, skill development for school-aged students involves a high level of classroom-based skill development. For students with ASD, who struggle to match the social and environmental demands in novel situations and often have difficulty generalizing skill development across settings, community-based teaching, re-teaching, and supported practice of practical skills is a valuable and necessary aspect of successful service delivery. Moreover, it is a valuable tool for helping individuals participate maximally in their local communities. Community experiences may include services where an individual wants to work, live, play and gain further education as an adult. They additionally provide critical opportunities for development of self-determination and independence around living, social/communication, consumer skills, transportation, recreation and leisure.
