About Closed Support Groups for Parents of Adults:
A closed support group for parents of adults (previously called a Support Group Series) has the same group members (up to 12) for a set number of sessions (8). In contrast, an open group has an undefined number of group members with new people coming and going on a regular basis. Closed support groups are ideal for parents who want to go beyond sharing their story with newcomers each time at open support group meetings. Parents who join closed support groups are looking to establish a stronger connection with and get more extensive peer support from the same group members in a series of meetings. These closed support group meetings involve a mix of education on various topics as well as check-ins with parents and family members on issues and successes.
Each closed support group for parents of adults focuses on different themes and questions, but here are some of the most common ones:
- Now that your child is an adult, how do you parents without power?
- How do you keep the lines of communication open?
- How can you help your child find and sustain employment and live independently?
- How to get your adult child to expand his or her social network?
- What local providers, programs, and services have other parents used and what were the results?
- How have other parents tapped into health, income, housing and other benefits?
These closed support groups also let parents give voice to their concerns and frustrations and acknowledge both hard-won and unexpected victories.
Things to Know: Please plan to attend all 8 closed support group meetings to get the most out of peer support and to be able to give back as well. Be aware that we will share your email address with other members in this closed support group to encourage you to connect with each other between meetings. And remember “what happens in group stays in group.”
