WHAT: “He just won’t do his work!” This is a frequent complaint from both teachers and parents as they work with Middle and High School students who hate to write. When a student can’t, or won’t write, the teacher has a hard time measuring the student’s proficiency in ANY subject. Parents complain of homework battles. Teachers worry about credits and graduation. Behavior issues often result. Refusal to write affects academic achievement, grades, credits, and classroom behavior. All too often the language, organization, motor, and sensory demands of writing overwhelm our reluctant writers, especially those with Executive Function differences such as Learning Disability, Autism, and ADD. What looks like a refusal to do the work may actually be difficulty with the writing process. By working together, we can set our students up for success and help ALL kids become happy, successful writers.
