AANE Webinar: An Introduction to Supported Decision-Making

May 1 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm, Free

WHEN: Wednesday, May 1, 2019: 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM (EST)

WHERE: Online

HOST: AANE Staff with Michael J. Kendrick, PhD

COST: Free

WHAT: This webinar will introduce participants to the practice of supported decision-making–an alternative to guardianship recommended by national organizations that allows people with disabilities and other potentially vulnerable individuals a voice in the decision making process. Rather than having choices made for the individual, a support team helps the person make their own decisions. This empowering and person-centered practice is increasingly seen and recommended as an effective means of support, which retains and strengthens the person’s rights. The session will also show how it can be combined with other forms of support for the individual.

Michael J. Kendricks, PhD, is known for his extensive work for more than 40 years as an independent, international consultant in human services and community work. His work as an advocate, activist, teacher, evaluator, consultant, writer, and advisor has involved him in many of the key leadership issues of the day. His more recent work in supported decision-making is based on many decades of support and teaching concerning what it takes to enable people to be empowered, find and express their voice, and effectively manage the decisions that arise in their lives.
