Research Study

This study is about understanding the conversations between special educators and students with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) and their parents during transition planning in school. This can include alternatives to guardianship, guardianship, and transfer of rights. We want to learn more about how to make transition and transfer of rights conversations better.

We are interviewing students, parents and special educators. Students must be in school in New York (NY) or in Massachusetts (MA) or graduated from school in those two states. We will interview “triads,” or groups of 3 people separately:
• Students with IDD ages 18-22 from school districts in MA and school districts in NY
• Students’ parents
• Special educators/transition professionals who gave the family information about transfer-of-rights, guardianship, and alternatives to guardianship.

We want to learn more about how to make transition and transfer of rights conversations better. Research shows that special educators talk to students with IDD and their parents about guardianship. These conversations usually happen close to when students are turning 18, the legal age when they can make decisions about their education and other parts of their lives. If people have guardians, they may have less input in important decisions that affect their lives.

If you agree to join the study, you will fill out a screening survey to make sure you are eligible for it. Being eligible means participating in an interview. We will hold all interviews on Zoom. Each interview will last 45-60 minutes. Before the interview, we will go over a consent form with you, so you know your rights and choices in the study.

We will ask you about yourself, your experience at school and what it was like for you to learn about guardianship and alternatives. Once we have completed all interviews in the “triad,” (student, their parent, and their education staff) each student will receive a $25 Amazon gift card.
