Disclosure and workplace accommodations for young adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities and co-occurring mental health conditions

Research Study

Individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD) are significantly underemployed, with recent estimates of community-based employment at 20.2%. Approximately one-third of people with IDD also have a co-occurring mental health condition. The population of young adults with IDD and co-occurring mental health conditions (YA with IDD-MH) is even less likely to be employed than their peers without mental health conditions. One way to reduce these employment disparities is to provide reasonable accommodations that optimize workplace performance. However, in order for YA with IDD-MH to receive these accommodations, they must disclose their disability. Little is known about how YA with IDD-MH engage in disability disclosure and how the content, timing, and recipient (e.g., supervisor or coworker) of disclosure influences accommodation attainment. Additionally, no research has explored the types of accommodations perceived to be most effective for this population.

Aims:

1) Describe how YA with IDD-MH make decisions about workplace disability disclosure.
2) Describe the training and advice provided to YA with IDD-MH regarding workplace disability disclosure.
3) Develop a typology of accommodations perceived to support mental-health related needs of young adults with IDD-MH in the workplace.

Methods relevant to AANE members:

We will conduct interviews with YA with IDD-MH ages 16-30 (n=15-20)
Interviews will be conducted online by both a researcher from BU and a researcher with a disability.
Interviews will take approximately 1 hour.
All participants will receive a $20 gift card.
