Do you have opinions, ideas, or expertise that you’d like to share with the AANE community?

To become a Contributor to this blog, all you have to do is Register and start writing!

Besides being a fun way to share ideas and start conversations without leaving your house, putting your thoughts on our blog helps us grow our community. The more people look at our site, the more chances we have to raise awareness and/or donations. That means even though you may not have the means to be one of AANE’s major financial benefactors, you can still pitch in just by telling people what you think!

NOTE: All Contributor posts get moderated prior to publication – that is, you won’t see your post immediately after you submit it, but probably by the next day (depending on how much free time the moderators have). This is to ensure that all posts comply with our Guidelines. After you’ve submitted a few posts without having content rejected, you can email the blog administrator to request that your status be changed from Contributor to Author – then your posts will be viewable as soon as you submit them.

Guidelines for Blog Posts

Since this blog is part of aane.org, we restrict content that would reflect badly on AANE. To avoid having your post rejected by the moderator, please consider these simple rules before submitting a contribution.

  • No profanity. However, feel free to say &%@#! all you want.
  • Please limit your topics to those that would be appropriate to ALL AGE groups. (I’m sure there are places where it’s acceptable to offer your reviews of adult entertainment, etc. This isn’t one of them.)
  • We all see more than enough ads every day as it is, so please don’t try to sell stuff here.
  • Don’t be insulting or intentionally offensive. Obviously this is one of those eye-of-the-beholder kinds of things, but we’re not publishing anything that looks like a specific put-down of a particular person or group.
  • If possible, try to be interesting. We’re not going to block a contribution just because it happens to be, you know, a snooze fest, but the goal is definitely to increase viewership and stimulate dialog, not cure insomnia.

That’s all. Happy blogging!

First let me give you a heads up – the link on this page to “Register” as a contributor – is broken!

    Now:

We all have our hands full with Asperger’s. Are you ready for a fun break this summer – for both yourself and your child?

I just published my new novel. “The Screaming Stone”, the first in my Marcie and Robbie (a teen Aspie) series of young adult novels. I am already excited about my readers’ response because The Screaming Stone is a young adult novel that is different from all my other books.

Here is a clip of one of the reviews written by the respected Autism authority, Gavin Bollard on his blog Life with Asperger’s :

I suppose that you’re wondering why this review belongs on this blog? The character of Robbie very clearly has Asperger’s syndrome. It’s never explicitly stated in the book but his behaviour is obvious. He has obsessions, routines which need to be followed and at one point he even has a meltdown. Of course, Asperger’s was not a diagnosed condition in the sixties and Robbie receives the sort of treatment provided to aspies in the day. In that sense, it’s hard reading about a character who is misunderstood by everyone around him. Given today’s tolerance and intervention, Robbie’s life would have been so much easier.

Author J P Osterman is no stranger to Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome with two children on the spectrum. It is nice to see that she doesn’t feel the need to label Robbie but simply takes him as an individual and describes him as he is. It is us, the readers, who put the label on him.

At the end of the day, its hard to say what makes The Screaming Stone so fascinating. Is it the mystery itself or the background and behavior of the characters? I guess the appeal will depend upon your age and experience. Younger readers will be drawn to the mystery while older readers will find the character study more fascinating. I’d recommend The Screaming Stone … a great addition to the mystery genre for young adults.

While this is not your typical Autism/Asperger’s help book, it is a fun read especially for those on the spectrum and for those who live with and work to help them, showing the strong belief that every teen with Asperger’s, like the character Robbie, is dearly loved and contributes to the lives of those who love him. But it also was written to be a mainstream Young Adult novel.

    About Joyce:

Joyce Osterman is the proud mother of an adult son with Autism and a 13 year old son with Asperger’s – mainstreamed in middle school. Most of her professional career includes writing. She graduated from University of San Diego (USD) with a BA degree in Writing and English and an MA degree in Education and Student Counseling from Azusa Pacific University. She has won several Awards including Outstanding Teacher Recognition awards for her student’s literary prizes in writing. She also won the prestigious Rupert Hughes Award at the seminal Maui Writers Conference and first place in the Southern California Writer’s conference for her one-act drama The Man Next to Me. Joyce has spent two years at Texas State University studying psychology.

So, if this sounds at all interesting, please go to the publishers page for The Screaming Stone where you can buy your own copy, or check out JPs website for even more info: http://www.jposterman.com

    Thank you, for your time,

    Sincerely,

    JP
