by LucyMB

Check out these upcoming housing opportunities for adults on the spectrum. For more information, please contact the listed person below, not AANE.

For Adults in the 5-College Area, Western Mass.

A group of families in the 5 College Area of Western Mass. has begun the process of creating a cluster of affordable apartments for reasonably independent individuals with autism and Asperger’s. The cluster of ten apartments will comprise a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments. Four apartments will be owned by families and the remainder rented from an agency that will provide services.

While residents will live independently, they can participate in community activities and evening meals together. A support team will be available 24 hours a day on an as needed basis.  The level of support provided will depend on the individual’s needs. Each member of the community will be working or volunteering in the 5 College Area during the day and should be able to use bus transportation independently.

Three of the families that will own apartments have been identified; one more family interested in owning an apartment needs to be identified. If you are interested in this opportunity, please step forward now so that you may participate in the planning process.

For a group of adults or a family in Reading

NuPath has a vacant home in Reading ( a HUD property). The house is a charming 3 – 4 bedroom Colonial within walking distance to Reading town center and the Commuter Rail. Potential tenants would need to meet the income threshold.  While individual  calculations will apply, HUD requires funding at $745 per bed and they subsidize a portion of that.  The portion that the tenant pays toward is based on their earned income and SSI, or like income. For example, someone earning SSI totaling $480 per month would pay $134/month with HUD paying $611.  In addition, the rent covers all heat, water and telephone as well as building related repairs.
