Hi. I live in Western Mass. I'm 20 years old and was diagnosed with AS about 7 years ago. I just wanted to tell you about the incredible adventure I currently find myself a part of, thanks to AS. Last November I saw a movie about an off-road auto race called the Baja 1000, a race considered to be the longest and most difficult race in the world. I told my father (who is also my scoutmaster) about the race and then put to him an interesting concept: What if our Scout Venture Crew were to design and build a truck to compete in this race? It was a crazy idea, but he loved it. And so began a seemingly impossible project to compete in a race that has defeated celebrities with million dollar vehicles.
Now I don't like to take too much credit (what Aspie does?), but honestly, I have pretty much spearheaded this project: written sponsorship letters to 81 different companies, regional, national, and international; placed classified ads in newspapers and websites seeking members; and even begged my way into getting exhibit booths set up at local racetracks and motor sports events. I attacked this project with a conviction and determination I would never have thought possible—nor would anyone else who has ever known me! Interestingly enough, it wasn't until just recently that I realized what the driving force behind all this is. As it turns out, the force that is giving me this strength and determination in completing this project is none other than my Asperger Syndrome. As you of course know, just about everyone with AS has an obsession of some sort. Mine happens to be cars and all things automotive. It is this passion for cars and motor sports that has given me the “drive” to do just about anything to make this project happen.
