In 2016, David Sugar and Benedikt Sander approached AANE about creating programs especially for fathers of children, teens, or adults with Asperger profiles. They were eager to create a community where fathers could share their experiences, support one another, and acquire tools to parent their children more confidently.

About the AANE Father's Initiative and Fathers' Group

Kick-off Event with Author Ron Fournier

The group’s first event, held in May 2016, was a talk by Ron Fournier, journalist and author of the book “Love That Boy.”. Forty-five fathers attended.

Fathers’ Group in Watertown, MA

As a result of the success of the kick-off event, the group decided to meet once a month, on the last Wednesday of the month. (Please note that in some months this is not the fourth Wednesday.) We invite interested fathers to contact Brenda Dater at 617 393-3824 x 22, or brenda.dater@aane.org.

As the group continues to meet, we will plan other special events, and explore ways of serving fathers who live outside of Massachusetts. Please feel free to email Brenda your ideas.

What if I don’t live in Massachusetts?

Meanwhile, keep in mind that staff in AANE Child and Teen Services, and AANE Adult Services, welcome opportunities to speak with fathers (and grandfathers!) about your family members with Asperger profiles. If you have a lot of questions or concerns, you may wish to sign up for a one hour Parent Coaching session. Coaching is available no matter where you live, as we can speak with you in person, by phone or over Skype.
